One of the most fundamental and distinguished characteristics of Islamic social system is equity. All human beings are the offspring of Adam and Eve and that is why they are above any colour, cast and linguistic distinctions. They all belong to the family of human beings. The Holy Quran says
System of accountability in Islam
“People, We created you all from a single man and a single woman, and made you into races and tribes so that you should recognize one another. In God’s eyes, the most honoured of you are the ones most mindful of Him: God is all knowing, all aware.” Surah Al Hujurat -13
Amity and brotherhood are the other two important characteristics of Islamic social system. Belief in one Allah and His last messenger Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ties all Muslims in an undeniable and unbreakable relationship of brotherhood. The Holy Quran says
“The believers are brothers, so make peace between your two brothers and be mindful of God, so that you may be given mercy.” Surah Al Hujurat – 10
“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah and do not be divided. Remember Allah’s favour upon you when you were enemies, then He united your hearts, so you—by His grace—became brothers.” Surah Al Imran – 103
Men and women are the basic pillars of society. Whereas men act as the guardians, women are believed to be the pioneer of a nation. Being human, men and women have some instinctive desires that need to be fulfilled. In order to protect society from social and moral disorder, Islam demands the satisfaction of such desires by following its principles of matrimony. The Messenger of Allah said: “O young men, whoever among you can afford it, let him get married, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding chastity, and whoever cannot then he should fast, for it will be a restraint (wija’) for him.” [Sunan an-Nasa’I, 3209]
The social system of Islam aims at creating a peaceful, prosperous society where the dignity, life and property of a person are secure. People in such society should endorse peace in real terms and help one another in goodness and forbad badness. The Holy Quran say
“Cooperate with one another in goodness and righteousness, and do not cooperate in sin and transgression. And be mindful of Allah. Surely Allah is severe in punishment.” Surah Al Mai’dah – 2
Another important characteristic of social system of Islam is the development of sense of responsibility within people both individually and collectively.
The effect of social system of Islam is two folds. It deals human beings both individually and collectively. Some of the important effects of social system of Islam have been discussed in below paragraphs.
Within an individual Islamic social system develops the characteristics of responsibility and dutifulness. A society can develop only if its every member behave rationally and act as responsible citizen. In this regard a famous Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is
“All of you are shepherds and each one is responsible for his flock. A leader of a people is a shepherd and responsible for them. A man is a shepherd over his family and is responsible for them. A woman is a shepherd over her husband’s house and his children and she is responsible for them. And a servant is a guardian over his master’s property and is responsible for it. So all of you are guardians and are responsible for your charges.” (Bukhari)
The social system of Islam time and again revives the faith of a man in Allah Almighty and His last messenger Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.). This pushed him towards the acquisition of knowledge that could help him in better understanding Islam and its fundamentals. The Holy Quran says
“And pray, My Lord! Increase me knowledge.” – Surah Taha 114
This system also makes a person hard working. It hails hardworking and pragmatism than idleness. The Holy Quran says
“And there is not for man except that (good) for which he strives.” Surah Al Najm
One of the best ways of rectification of an individual is worshiping and prayers. In Islam five times a day worship/prayer is compulsory on every individual. This keeps him on right track and prevents him from going astray. Thus a balance in society is maintained.
The social system of Islam also emphasizes on correcting social life of people collectively. By creating the above characteristics in people, Islam helps in the development of a peaceful and prosperous society.
