Major Industries Of Pakistan CSS

Industry is an important sector of Pakistan’s economy that contributes 23 per cent to the country’s annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Though industrial sector of the country is under developed but still there are some industries that have earned an international recognition.

Cotton Textile Industry: Cotton textile industry is considered the backbone of Pakistan economy. After independence it has made an enormous progress. Japan and Hong Kong are the biggest importers of our clothes. Cotton textile industries are mostly located in Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad.

Cement Industry: At the time of independence Pakistan had only one cement industry. Now many industries are working in Daud Khel, Dand Kot, Hyderabad, Wah, Hazara and Karachi.

Sugar Industry: Since partition sugar industry has also made an enormous progress in the country. There are about 78 sugar mills (taken from Ikram Rabbani book) in the country out of which 40 are located in Punjab, 32 in Sindh and 6 in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa.

Paper Industry: In the country first and second paper mills were established in 1953 and 1959 respectively in East Pakistan. After the fall of Dhaka in 1971, Pakistan was totally deprived of paper production.  At present its factories are located at Lahore, Gujranwala, Lahore, Nawshehra. For newspaper needs a factory is working in Hyderabad.

Fertilizer Industry: Pakistan had no fertilizer factory at the time of partition. Today a number of fertilizer factories are working at Daud Khel, Multan and Faisalabad.

Cigarettes: Pakistan had not tobacco products manufacturing factory at the time of independence. We had to export our tobacco in raw form and then purchased final products from other countries. Today we have more than 30 tobacco products manufacturing factories (taken from Ikram Rabbani book) that not met the needs of the country but also we are exporting it. These factories are located at Karachi, Multan, Lahore, Sukkur and Nowshehra.

Leather Industry: Pakistan is also a major exporter of animal skins and product and goods made of it. It major factories are located in Lahore, Karachi and Hyderabad.

Iron And Steel Industry: At the time of independence Pakistan had no iron and steel mill. The first such mill was established in 1959 in Chittagong which we lose by losing East Pakistan. Now a steel mill has been established in Karachi with the cooperation of Russia former Soviet Union.

Electric Goods Industry: Pakistan has also progressed much in the manufacturing of electric goods. It factories are located in Gujrat, Karachi, Lahore and Gujranwala.

Car Manufacturing Industry: Automotive manufacturing industry is one of the fast growing industries of Pakistan. At present there are 3,200 automobile manufacturing plants in the country. Some of these plants are located at Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad.

Cooking Oil And Ghee Industry: To promote Ghee Industry in the country, Ghee Corporation of Pakistan (GCP) was setup in 1973. Today its mills are located in Karachi, Multan, Lahore, Peshawar and Bahawalpur.

Armament Industry: We are not only self dependent in the making of small weapons such as rifles, machine guns, mortars and other similar weapons but Pakistan is also exporting them to other Muslims countries. Pakistan also manufactures a small air plane, known as Mushaak, for pilots training.

Ship Industry: At Karachi shipyard small to medium scale ships are made. Now a factory of ship making has also been established at Bin Qasim.

Miscellaneous Industries: A number of other important industries of Pakistan includes card board industry, rubber industry, machine industry, chemical industry, bicycle industry, crude oil refining industry and glass making industry. 

Conclusion

From the list of above mentioned industries we can conclude that the industrial sector of the country, despite many problems, is flourishing day by day. Now it is time that government should give a serious pondering to its growth.
